The video clips on this site are taken from our award-winning satirical comedy program in South Africa, PUPPET NATION. PUPPET NATION is created and produced by Both Worlds in Cape Town, with contributing writers and voice talent in the USA.
In 2009, South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) commissioned and quickly abandoned our new comedy tv program - a half hour political satire of "the news" featuring latex puppets created by Thierry Cassuto and Zapiro. Our pilot tv show lampooned South Africa's post-apartheid democracy, taking on tough issues for audiences to "laugh about it and think about it." SABC said “South Africa was not ready.” Undaunted, Thierry’s company Both Worlds launched ZANEWS, a daily 5 minute video spoof with our larger than life puppet characters, as a blog.
ZANEWS was initially sponsored by The Mail & Guardian online and Kulula Airlines. Daily programming online was also supported for a few years through grants intended to advance freedom of speech and political discourse. We expanded distribution of ZANEWS on Summit TV, the satellite financial news channel, radio, comic strips in print media, and grew with our loyal audience on YouTube, iTunes, and our own comedy website, zanews.co.za. For the past three years, our expanded half-hour weekly prime time program, PUPPET NATION, has been distributed throughout southern Africa on satellite tv.
Our story has been featured on major media and news outlets in South Africa, and internationally on CNN, Al Jazeera, and BBC. We've won awards for our blogs, website, producers, writers, voice talent, puppeteers, and exceptional crafts. PUPPET NATION has won 29 SAFTAs (South African Emmys), more than any other comedy program, as well as two successive International Emmy nominations.
